Skull With Built-In Suana: “Wellness Skull”

Usually we wash our skulls - you know, hair, face, ears - but Dutch artist Joep van Lieshout would rather wash in his skull…in his skull that he built…in his skull that he built that’s large enough to climb into. To lively up Austria’s capital, Lieshout created this 15-foot tall “Wellness Skull” that features an 8-person sauna as well as a bathtub in the neck. “It’s really a piece that has many different interpretations,” van Lieshout said when asked about the skull’s deeper meaning. “Like a painter uses paint, I use design.” The best part is when the suana is running steam billows out from the eyes. Although the sauna is off-limits for public use, visitors will be able to go inside to take a peek around every first Saturday of the month or by appointment through March 15. If you want one for yourself, maybe you can call up Lieshout. But it’ll probably cost an arm and a leg…err…an ulna and a fibula…and a skull.
