Japan’s Trains Put NYC’s To Shame
December 2nd, 2008 in Art & Design by Lars

While you’ll most likely end up in cuffs Stateside if your caught paintin’ up a train/subway car, in Japan they actually let certain artists put their creativity in locomotion. Of the countless trains running on Japan’s 20,000-kilometer (12,000-mile) rail network, a few are decorated with images of anime and manga characters, colorful ads, and designs by notable artists. Imagine seeing Spiderman cruisin’ by you while you’re waiting in the subway!? One train Spidey can’t stop. Click “Read more” to see more of Spidey as well as Pickatchu - he looks better on a train than a playing card. Visit Pink Tentacle for more info and images.

“Ever Stopped…” Poster by Daren Newman
November 21st, 2008 in Art & Design by Lars

The trippy Quentin Tarantino Movie Posters were a nice change-up for your dull, white room, now we have an even artsier take on the poster game. UK-based designer, illustrator and typographer Daren Newman implemented his superb artistry skills to create this “Ever Stopped To Wonder What Makes Something Beautiful” Poster, which features timeless swirls, curves and flourishes intertwined elegant, fluid lettering to produce a striking answer to the question posed within the artwork. And, for added pleasure, when the lights are low, the phosphorescent ink glows in the dark - not bad at all Daren, not bad at all. Even better, it’s limited to 60 and signed by Daren. Nope, not everyone will have this on their walls. Peep the glow-in-the-dark action below and order it direct from Daren Newman’s Online Store. 594 x 420mm, $96

allRGB Shows Its True Colors
November 19th, 2008 in Art & Design by Lars

Whether you’re aware of it or not, you look at RGB (Red Green Blue) color models everyday on the computer and television, now thanks to allRGB, you can find images where every single pixel is an unique RGB color. Put sorta simply, the objective of allRGB is to create images with one pixel for every RGB-color (16,777,216 to be exact); not one color missing, and not one color twice - yeah, we’re buggin’ out too. The image above - can you guess it? - is a scaled down version of this one. Beware, these images can make you dizzy!

Skull With Built-In Suana: “Wellness Skull”
November 17th, 2008 in Art & Design by Lars

Usually we wash our skulls - you know, hair, face, ears - but Dutch artist Joep van Lieshout would rather wash in his skull…in his skull that he built…in his skull that he built that’s large enough to climb into. To lively up Austria’s capital, Lieshout created this 15-foot tall “Wellness Skull” that features an 8-person sauna as well as a bathtub in the neck. “It’s really a piece that has many different interpretations,” van Lieshout said when asked about the skull’s deeper meaning. “Like a painter uses paint, I use design.” The best part is when the suana is running steam billows out from the eyes. Although the sauna is off-limits for public use, visitors will be able to go inside to take a peek around every first Saturday of the month or by appointment through March 15. If you want one for yourself, maybe you can call up Lieshout. But it’ll probably cost an arm and a leg…err…an ulna and a fibula…and a skull.
