    Interview: Tyga

August 4th, 2008 in Features by CJL

In today’s saturated hip-hop game there’s no bigger compliment for a newcomer than a co-sign from rapper-of-the-moment Lil Wayne. Such was the case for 19-year-old hip-hopper Tyga, who has built upon his hype of signing with Wayne’s Young Money Entertainment in 2007, with his liquid-inspired smash single “Coconut Juice” off of his debut album No Introduction.

In the past few months, the heavily tatted young’n has been popping up on MTV, touring with Lil Wayne and modeling for a slew of relevant streetwear brands. With his song “Diamond Life” being featured on the latest installment of Madden 09 (in stores August 12) we caught up with the Compton-native to talk about his career, his favorite brands and what he brings to the rap game. Hit the link below to read the full interview.

    Feature: Starks Interview & Giveaway

June 17th, 2008 in Features by Lars

Footwear accessory company Starks has been supplying high quality laces for skaters and non-skaters alike for years. With so much attention placed on the sneaker itself, Starks saw a void in the industry and created laces that coincided with features/colors of different shoes, like their famous Jordan-inspired concrete print laces. Many are also unaware that Starks is proud to represent skateboarding and even has a tight-knit skate team. With a stronghold on the sneaker/skate industry, Starks is continuing to expand with toggles, belts, and a few secret collaborations. Check out the interview we had with Starks after the jump to freshen up on your sneaker etiquette and expect to see more big projects from Starks in 2008.

C to the JL and Starks have come together to bring you this lace giveaway. All you have to do is send an email here with your name and address, and we will draw the winner on Monday, June 23rd at 8pm EST. The following laces are included in the contest.

    1 - 45″ Splatter Lace
    1 - 54″ Purple Lace
    1 - 45″ Tennis Classic Lace

    Shop Feature: Concepts

May 27th, 2008 in Features by CJL

A few years ago, only loyal street enthusiasts were aware of Concepts, a small boutique tucked away toward the back of the iconic Tannery in Cambridge, Massachusetts. It supplied Cambridge’s loyal independent clothing connoisseurs with the latest limited sneakers, tees, and fitteds. Now with the recent opening of their new store on Brattle street, Concepts is not only the most well-known boutique duo in the Cambridge/Boston area, it’s reverenced worldwide. With many clothing lines unwilling to “sell out” to any random shop, it’s difficult to get accounts, but Concepts is one of few boutiques across the U.S. to carry premier brands like Supreme, HUF, and Daves Quality Meat. They even worked with Clarks, Recon, and Timberland in the past. Now that Concepts has Boston/Cambridge fashion fiends on lock, even supplying the hipsters with a “Members Only” VIP lounge located in the basement of their new store, it’s time for them to stomp out the rest of the wannabe boutiques with a…Concepts x Nike SB Dunk!

On Saturday, May 31st, Concepts will release their first collaboration with Nike SB dubbed as the “Lobster Dunk”. Limited to 200 pairs and a special limited edition box with tons of goodies. If you’re in the Boston area, Concepts is just a short train or bus ride away. From the overall layout to the high fashion brands they carry, Concepts won’t only drop your jaw, it’ll revitalize your wardrobe. So build your street cred by two-fold and go visit the new Brattle St. Concepts or the original Tannery store. See exclusive photos of the new store after the jump!

    Store Profile: Standard ATL

Working with the website allows me to travel places that I never thought I’d visit. I finally had a chance to make it down to the dirty south, aka Atlanta. There are many boutiques surrounding the area, but one shop called Standard is by far the staple boutique in this busy city. They carry brands such as Maharishi, WESC, BBC|Ice Cream, Nike, Puma, just to name a few. It’s located on the busy street of Peach Tree Road, and the clientele stretches from Elton John all the way to Usher. Instead of doing a usual shop interview, I am going to hit you with pictures and let your imagination do the rest. Hit the link below to view Standard ATL at it’s finest.

    Store Profile: Division East

November 7th, 2007 in Features by Lars

    defeature3.jpg
I saw David Dowd eating a vibrant green, crunchy pickle and I thought, “Now there’s a guy who knows what he’s doing; he settles for nothing but the best”. Sure enough, he bought a fresh pickle at the local Farmers Market. That is what Division East is all about. They don’t settle for second best. They don’t feed the machine. And unlike many of todays “skate shops”, they have passion for what they do, which means they give you honest opinions about the latest video or pair of sneakers. So next time your contemplating on where to spend your hard-earned money, don’t blow it at a place that can’t even tell you what Dunk “SB” means, rather support the passionate, driven, and informative individuals that work at Division East and get the best pickle.

    Features: Elm Company Interview

November 3rd, 2007 in Features by Lars

    elminterviewpic1.jpg

The graceful, majestic and boundless Elm tree was the first symbol of American independence. Boston was home to the “Liberty Tree”, a tree where patriotic citizens often met to ensure our freedom. North America once flourished with Elm trees, however, many met their fate to “Dutch Elm Disease”. Nonetheless, the ELM COMPANY still lives on and represents the Elm tree’s beauty, elegance, and splendor in their headwear. Their attention to detail, creativity, and individuality keeps them alive and satisfies the independent customer.

    Feature: Kevin Booker

October 29th, 2007 in Features by Lars

    kbinter2.jpg

If hard work gets people into heaven, Kevin Booker is on his way up. Maybe it’s Virginia Beach, maybe it’s jacking wood and PVC from construction sites and building flat bars, or maybe it’s simply Kevin Booker’s saucy personality. Whatever the case, let’s face it; the kid got drive and style for miles. He’s a shredder on Pharrell’s Ice Cream Skate team and a VA Fleezer, but how is he gonna sweeten up those colorful kicks? Well, my man is on the groundbreaking clothing line Orisue. Yes, I said Orisue. Apparently, he’s got the gear on lock; now let’s talk bout the skating. How does “Booker” sound among names such as: Dyrdek, Van Engelen, Kalis, Dill, or Kirchart? Well, he’s on flow for AWS and is shooting for a pro spot on the team. I think he’ll fit right at home. He’s not buying a stairway to heaven; he’s building one.
